Description & Distribution
One of the most exotic and highly priced spices
in the world, Indian cardamom is called the "Queen of the Spices". Indian
cardamom a premium preference and relished for its distinct enriching
properties. It is sweet in taste and highly aromatic.
Cardamom is
the dried fruit of a herbaceous perennial, with branched subterranean
rhizomes. The hand picked fruits, born in the panicles of the plant are
dried under controlled conditions to retain their flavor and color.
Propagation is by seeds or portions of rhizomes.
The shady slopes
of the Western Ghats with a warm, humid climate and loamy soil rich in
organic matter complimented by distributed rainfall make the Indian
Cardamom unique in aroma, flavor and size.
Cardamom is grown mainly
in Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. Kerala is the leading State in
cardamom production with a share of 53 percent, while Karnataka
contributes 40 percent and Tamil Nadu 7 percent.
